At Royal Road Vet, we understand how important it is to diagnose health issues accurately and efficiently. Abdominal ultrasound is a vital diagnostic tool used to assess the organs in your pet's abdomen, including the liver, gall bladder, kidneys, spleen, urinary bladder, pancreas, adrenal glands, lymph nodes, and intestines. When blood tests and radiographs don’t provide a clear diagnosis, ultrasound often becomes the next step to pinpoint the source of an illness or better define the problem.
In some cases, a needle and syringe can be used to obtain small samples from an area of concern. These samples can help us identify what is affecting your pet. Mild sedation is often used during this process, and sometimes, the pet may require sedation for the scan itself if they’re too anxious or squirmy.
Ultrasound is also a reliable and non-invasive method for diagnosing pregnancy in both dogs and cats. This procedure is quick, cost-effective, and completely safe for the unborn puppies or kittens. Pregnancy can usually be detected 18-20 days post-breeding, with more accurate results appearing after 28 days. While it may not always provide an exact count of the litter size, it does allow us to observe heartbeats and make an estimated count.
Comprehensive Diagnostics for Your Pet’s Health
-
Advanced Imaging for Precise Diagnosis
If any complications such as uterine infections (pyometra) or aborted fetuses are found during a pregnancy ultrasound, we can identify them early and take the necessary steps for treatment. This method ensures that any health issues are addressed right away, improving the chances for a healthy pregnancy.

Non-Invasive Ultrasound
With over 10 years of experience, we utilize an advanced MyLab Five ultrasound machine. This equipment provides high-quality images, reports, and even video clips, which help us assess your pet’s condition thoroughly.
